The Phillips Collection
"Everyone who loves early
art loves The Phillips Collection and envies Washington for having
it." -- Robert Hughes, Art Critic, Time magazine
Opened in the Phillips' home in 1921, The Phillips Collection
continues to be one of the leading, favorite, small museums of the
world.
Duncan and Marjorie Phillips' unique vision and love of art is
reflected in this magnificent collection of European and American
masterpieces with works by El Greco, Chardin, Manet, Bonnard, Van
Gogh, Degas, Gauguin, Cezanne, Renoir, Vuillard, Klee, Braque, Dove,
Rothko, and Lawrence. The Phillips Collection is especially noted
for its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including
Renoir's dazzling The Luncheon of the Boating Party.
This video documents the evolution of this very special collection
with historical footage of Marjorie Phillips, one of the co-founders,
Laughlin Phillips, her son, and other members of the Phillips family.
